Huge congratulations to one of our new playgroup assistants, Nikita Parsons, who gets married today to Matt Fellingham. We wish them every happiness in the years to come.
Thanks to the generosity of all the parents throughout the year, helping
with our fundraising efforts, we have been able to buy new high visibility
jackets for all of the children to wear when we go on playgroup outings to the
park or the fire station. How cute do they look? :)
Papillon
Playgroup - Spreading our wings.
Over the last 6 years we've built Papillon Playgroup up to the point where we have now filled our home at the Masonic Hall.
An opportunity has arisen for us to expand into an additional site at Tannery Drift School, and we are delighted to announce that from September 2011 Papillon Playgroup will have 2 settings within Royston, and will be able to offer our children and their parents the same excellent standards of care but with a choice of locations.
The Masonic Hall group will maintain the same hours: 9:30 - 12:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00 to 1:45 every day except Wednesday.
Papillon Tannery's hours are not yet finalised but are likely to be 9:15 - 12:15 Monday to Friday.
We will be able to accommodate your 15 free hours in both settings.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support over the last 6 years and for your patience and ongoing support during our expansion. We expect there'll be a few teething problems while we set up the new site, but we'll try to keep these to a minimum.
Please inform Carrie and Anne if you are interested in moving to Papillon Tannery in September, or if you would rather stay at the Masonic Hall. The sessions will be run in the same way at both sites, and the staff will be the familiar faces, with several new and welcome additions.
Please also let us know if you would like your child to attend any extra sessions from September.
There will be a list of toys needed on the door and we'll gratefully receive any donations you are able to make towards equipment for the new setting. Once again, thank you for your support during this exciting time. Please keep an eye on our website www.papillonplaygroup.co.uk for further updates, or speak to us directly if you would like any additional information.
Anne & Carrie.
Papillon Playgroup are delighted to announce that they will be opening a second setting in September 2011 at Tannery Drift First School.
Papillon's town centre setting at the Masonic Hall has seen demand for places grow to capacity over the 6 years since the playgroup was founded by Early Years Childcare professionals Anne Walls and Carrie Page.
Over the last two years, in addition to their regular playgroup operations, Papillon have also been providing qualified childcare staff to support activities at the Royston Children's Centre and Angels Autism and ADHD Support Group.
An opportunity arose for the playgroup to open a second permanent setting, following discussions with the Head Teacher and governors of Tannery Drift First School earlier this month.
"The excellent facilities available at Tannery Drift will enable us to offer the same high quality care and education that we will continue to offer at our home at the Masonic Hall." said Anne Walls, manager and co-founder of Papillon Playgroup.
"We believe that partnering with Tannery Drift is a natural way for us to grow, and we are very excited about working with the school to provide the highest standards of care and education to more of Royston's 2, 3 and 4 year olds".
Anna Greetham, Head Teacher at Tannery Drift First School said "We are really looking forward to our new relationship with Papillon Playgroup. This partnership will ensure our school can extend and enhance our links with the local community; and means we can continue to offer the best educational opportunities to the children of Royston, for many years to come."
Further details about the new setting will be announced to parents shortly via newsletter and over the coming weeks via the playgroup's website: www.papillonplaygroup.co.uk
From 4th July the redevelopment of Fish Hill Square will begin, which will impact on access to the playgroup from that end of Jepps Lane. There will be limited parking and uneven surfaces to contend with, so you will probably find it easier to come in from the High Street end during those works. The council have promised to keep the disruption to a minimum, however there will be a few weeks of mess while they work on the new square. We hope this won't be too inconvenient and expect everything will be a lot nicer outside the Masonic Hall in time for the new school year in September.

Well how lazy are we? No news updates for 6 months! Terrible. But in fairness we have been very busy so I hope you'll forgive the lack of news.
A huge thanks to everyone who came along to our Spring Fair this year. It was a big success. Our newly trained face painters were very popular as was the tombola. In all we raised over £200 (still counting those smartie tubes) for new equipment and toys.
We're delighted to say that we can now open 5 days a week as Wednesday mornings at the Masonic Hall are now available for us to use. We will soon be announcing our Summer Club dates so please keep an eye on the website for details, or ask a member of staff for more information on that or the Wednesday sessions.
After Easter we're launching Buggy Buddies which is a set of educational tools introduced by Herts Council designed to enhance learning and communication. To quote from the HertsDirect website, "The Buggy Buddies are six friendly bugs that can be used by parents and practitioners to create fun, outside activities for young children to do when they are travelling to and from settings like children's centres, pre-schools, nurseries or childminders, and also when they are outside in the garden or at the park. They are an educational resource that children will love and parents and practitioners will find useful."
I promise we won't leave it so long to bring you news next time :o)
We are 5 years old :o)
We can't really believe it but Papillon Playgroup is 5 years old. To celebrate, we're having a birthday party on Friday 1st October from 3:30 to 5:00pm at the Masonic Hall. All of our children and their families, past and present, are welcome to come along for a slice of birthday cake and to make a birthday crown. We are really looking forward to seeing you all there.
Those 5 years really have gone quickly.
27th July 2010
We're really pleased to be taking part in the Royston Arts Festival once again this year. This time we will be making 2 big paintings, one will hopefully be displayed in St. John's Church as in previous years, and we're delighted to say that we have been invited to display the other one in the town hall. The event is taking place at the Masonic Hall on Saturday 25th September between 2pm and 4pm. Please come along and join in with your children, but remember that it gets very messy, so a spare set of clothes is always helpful.
25th May 2010
Bit of an update as we've not posted anything for a while. Firstly a big thank you to everyone who helped us raise money at this year's spring fair. Also to all the people who came to the Boar's Head quiz night which also added to the coffers. We raised an amazing £459.32. Fantastic!!! We have bought 2 new big cupboards which gives the children easy access to the toys, games and materials. We'll also be ordering in lots of new bits and pieces, paints, toys and stuff which the children will enjoy. Thank you al again for your great support.
The dates for the Summer club for 2, 3 and 4 year olds will be as follows:
We're delighted to report that Martha had a baby girl earlier this month. Mother and baby are doing fine and we hope to see them popping into playgroup very soon.
Last but by no means least, we would like to welcome Mel to our staff (pic and details to follow shortly on the staff page).
14th February 2010
We are looking forward to doing a lot of fundraising this half term in the run up to our annual Spring Fair. We are raising money this year for equipment to make the toys more accessible to the children (new cupboards). The children are taking part in a sponsored pancake flip. Between 8th and 12th March the children will be taking part in special fun activties to help raise funds. Raffle tickets will be avilable before the Spring Fair, prizes to be announced in due course.
10th December 2009
We had our Ofsted inspection last week, and we are delighted to say that we received an overall 'good' rating. There's only one level higher than good, outstanding, which is something we continue to strive towards. We are delighted to have received such a positive acknowledgement of all our hard work, and I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our staff for their excellent work and support.
11th November 2009
A few items to catch up on, as we've been a bit slack in updating our news recently.
Firstly, we have 2 new members of staff, Kate and Alex. Some of you will remember Alex who was our student last year. Well, we're delighted that she's decided to come back to work for us. We'd also like to welcome Kate, whose 2 children used to attend Papillon Playgroup and now their mum works here. We are sorry that Lou left us in September. Lou is still a good friend to all of us at Papillon and will be popping back from time to time to see us from time to time.
Back in August we were happy to be a part of the Royston Arts Festival
again. We had an open afternoon where anybody could come along to join in some
messy painting fun. We got through a lot of paint and a lot of paper, but the
finished artwork was fantastic, and was displayed in St. John's church for all
to see.
As I'm sure you know, today is Armistice Day. The children made some lovely
poppies, which they came and laid at the Royston war memorial with all the
other tributes.

2nd July 2009
Due to the fantastic response we had last summer we can confirm that the summer playscheme will take place again this year. The scheme is open to all children of ages 2,3 and 4 years, not just regular Papillon children, but to all children from Royston and the surrounding areas.
The sessions will run for the first 2 weeks in August as follows:
Sessions run from 10am to 1pm. A healthy snack will be provided.
The session prices are:
Payment will need to be made in advance when booking, to ensure places are held open for your children.
20th April 2009
Welcome back after the Easter break. We all hope you had a nice one.
Sorry it's been a while since we updated the news page. There's been quite a lot going on over the last term. We'd like to thank you all for your help and support with our Spring Fair. Our total stands at £266.28, which is a fantastic amount. If you still have any Smarties tubes to bring in then we can add that to the total. We have chosen some fantastic toys and equipment to purchase and will let you know when we order them.
In September we will be changing our hours slightly, possibly to include Lunch Club on Mondays and Fridays. We will be able to offer the Lunch Club within the government funding. Children could attend a full session or just attend the Lunch Club or a combination of the two. More details will be announced before the end of this term.
Finally, we will be running a summer play scheme again this year. We will let you know dates, prices etc nearer the time.

Our student, Alex, will be leaving us at the end of this week to go onto more studies towards her CACHE Certificate in Childcare and Education. She has a new placement at Studland Rise and we would like to wish her all the best for her continuing progress towards this qualification. Alex has been a wonderful addition to our staff throughout her time with us and we will miss her loads.
18th January 2009
Welcome back everyone, and a Happy New Year. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. We're back in the swing of things again and looking forward to another great year. We have a new member of staff, Katie, who has joined us this year. More details to follow on our staff page soon.
27th September 2008
We are delighted to have been a part of the Royston Arts Festival today, where we held a session to create a big painting by the children. The children used their hands, feet, brushes and stamps to create a wonderful masterpiece which was then displayed in Royston parish church. The children had great fun creating the artwork, and we are all proud to have it displayed so prominently. Thank you to everyone, big and small, who came along to join in the fun and to make it a very special day.
22nd June 2008
Today Anne, Carrie, Debs and Clare were four of the many people who took
part in the Pink Ribbon Run (walk / stagger / limp) on Therfield
Heath, in aid of breast cancer research. The weather was fantastic, sunny with
a nice cool breeze, perfect for the occasion. Kelly was on hand to cheer and
support, as were many family and friends. It was lovely to see many of our
children and their families both taking part in the event and supporting
others. The Papillon team walked the 4 mile course in a steady 45 minutes,
although Debs, in a fit of energy completed 10 minutes earlier. We all had a
great time and are delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause. Thanks
to everyone who sponsored us and came to cheer us along.
21st June 2008
We were sorry to lose Sue this month. Sue is moving back to Norfolk, where she grew up. It's a very sad time for us as Sue has been a valuable and much loved part of our team for a very long time. We will miss her loads, but would like to wish Sue and her family all the best for the future.
We are very fortunate to have a new play assistant who has joined us this month. Marta is from Gdansk in Poland, and is a fully qualified primary school teacher. Find out more details on our staff page.
Tomorrow will see a number of us taking part in the Pink Ribbon Run/Walk on Therfield heath. Photos and details of how we get on will be published here. Come along and give us a cheer.

We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who came to our Spring Fair yesterday and made it another great success. So far this year we made £144.79 for new toys and equipment for the children. We would especially like to thank all of the people who kindly gave their time to help out on the day, to everyone who donated gifts for the tombola, and made the wonderful cakes that went down so well with our visitors. We will be shopping for the new equipment over the next few weeks and will post photos on here. Once again, thanks to all who came, the children will be really pleased with the results.
21st March 2008
We now have Papillon Playgroup branded kit bags for sale. They are purple
with yellow logo and are ideal for all those spare bits and pieces you need to
bring to playgroup, such as nappies, shoes, gloves and scarf, clean clothes,
books or an apple for your favourite playgroup assistant :o) The bags are
available for £6.99 each. See Anne or Carrie for more details.
24th February 2008
We will be holding our 3rd Annual Spring Fair on Saturday 5th April 2008 at the Masonic Hall. There will be face painting, craft activities, Tombola, refreshments and much more. Full details will be posted here soon. As usual, all proceeds will go towards new toys and equipment for the playgroup.
14th January 2008
We were sorry to lose Tammy at the end of last year. She needed to spend time on family commitments, but will still be dropping by from time to time. We are still in touch and hope that Tammy will return when her situation allows. We wish her well and I know that she will be missed by all the staff and children.
This year we are pleased to welcome Clare Cox as our new play assistant. Clare has worked in playgroups and been a school assistant in Royston. You can find Clare's details on our updated staff page.
1st November 2007
We are now running lunch clubs on Tuesdays. We would also like to run these on Thursdays but need a few more children to take part. If you are interested in your child attending, then please speak to a member of staff for more information. Don't forget we also accept Busy Bees vouchers. More details can be found by visiting our links page. Alternatively, please speak to a member of staff for more information.
31st October 2007
We are sorry to announce that Liz has decided to leave Papillon Playgroup after working with us for most of our first 2 years. We would like to wish Liz all the best in her future ventures.
1st May 2007
A very big thank you to everyone who came to our Spring Fair for raising the amazing sum of £263.20, which is nearly four times the amount we raised last year. This means that we can buy lots of new and exciting things for the playgroup, as well as some additional equipment such as tables, cupboards and materials.
We have already started to get some new toys, including a new road playmat, trains and track for the train set, some my little ponies, dolls, space hoppers, toy cash registers and money, paints, glue and many other items. We are also grateful for the private donation of several tricycles, a rocking horse and 3 sit in bubble cars. The children really love these.
We would like to say a very big thank you also to all of the Royston town centre traders who donated such wonderful raffle prizes.
A full report of the day will be included in the May issue of the Listing, which we will publish on the website.
We are currently planning to open a Thursday lunch club and would like to hear from any parents who are interested in having their children attend. Please speak to any member of staff for more information.
Papillon Playgroup are also proud to be taking part in a special event due to take place in the Priory Gardens on 23rd June in aid of CLIC Sergeant and Addenbrookes play department for children with Leukemia...more details to follow.

10th February 2007
We were very grateful to receive a donation from the Boar's Head pub in Royston recently. They very kindly donated the proceeds of their pre Christmas quiz night to Papillon Playgroup for new equipment. The picture shows the wonderful new pushalong motorbike that we bought with the donation. We know the children will be very excited when they see it, and will really enjoy playing on it. So a great big thankyou to all at the Boar's Head pub for their very kind donation, and for thinking of us. We bought the bike at the Early Learning Centre in Hitchin, and as usual, their generosity in donating ex display toys was wonderful. We are delighted with the additional toys they donated and also the mountain of books that they had saved from a previous voucher scheme, some of which can be seen in the photo. Once again, we'd like to say a very big thankyou for all the generous assistance we are given throughout the year. The children benefit greatly from these donations. They help us to offer the children a wide educational experience as well as lots of fun activities to do throughout the term.
21st January 2007
We are currently planning a fundraising event to buy new equipment (we always need new equipment) for the children, and are looking for ideas. We would like to do something a bit different this year and ideas so far have ranged from an Easter Bunny parade, where we (the staff) dress up in bunny suits and go around the town rattling buckets, to a sponsored 'something' that the children can get involved with. We need your ideas for what that 'something' could be. Remember that our children are all tiny, so your ideas must bear that in mind; a sponsored silence is not likely to be very successful. We intend to hold our 2nd annual open day around Eastertime, which proved so successful for us last year, and we would like as many parents to get involved as possible. If you have any fundraising ideas or if you would like to offer your help with the open day, please let us know by visiting our contacts page.
Secondly, we have entered our website into the Herts24 web awards 2007. A link will be appearing on our front page shortly, where you will be able to vote for us.
7th January 2007
Happy New Year to all of you from all of us. A new term is upon us (we start back Monday 8th), and we are all looking forward to seeing our regular children back, and to welcoming the new children that are starting for the first time this term. We had a very busy end to last term, culminating in our Christmas party, which all the children attended. We were particularly pleased to see so many parents, grandparents, uncles & aunts come to the party to hear the children sing christmas songs and to see them receive their presents from Mrs Clause. Thank you to all the parents who brought along party food. We were overwhelmed with the amount of nice things that were brought for the children to eat & drink, you were all very generous.
We will be welcoming another new member of staff this term, Tammy Back, who has a background in children's entertainment. The more observant of the parents that were at the christmas party will already have seen Tammy dressed in a certain red suit....
Also this term, the morning session prices have risen from £7.85 to £8.00 per session. This is in line with the government price structure for funded sessions. We understand that this may cause difficulties for some parents, and we are more than happy to discuss payment plans for those parents who need extra assistance meeting their childcare costs. Please don't be afraid to talk to any member of staff in confidence if you need extra help.
This term's topics will be covering 'All about me', where the children will be learning about themselves, making a height chart, looking at their faces in a mirror and trying to copy what they see. We will be making a 'My Favourite Things' book in which the children can stick things that they like. We are also looking at healthy eating, and will be exploring different foods, their smell, taste & texture, and we'll be making a chart of good food vs naughty (but often nice) food. And we will be looking at Chinese New Year, trying out Chinese food (with chop sticks), and listening to Chinese music.
So we have a packed schedule this term. We look forward to seeing you all at Papillon Playgroup.
11th October 2006
Half term is almost upon us once again. It has been a good start to our second year. Expanding attendance numbers means that we have recruited a new playgroup assistant, Kelly Anderson who we are happy to welcome as a new member of our team. As numbers are expanding all the time, we are continuously looking out for new recruits and as such we have created a Vacancies page on the website. Follow the link from the menu on the left for more details.
After the half term holiday, we will be starting our Thursday morning sessions for the 3 year old group. This means that we will be open 4 days a week for the first time. Also after half term we will be running the lunch club again on Tuesdays. Visit our Sessions page for times and prices.
30th August 2006
We are now accepting Busy Bees childcare vouchers for all children that are not eligable to receive free government childcare places. This includes all under 3's. The Busy Bees vouchers are issued by your employer, and help to reduce your tax and national insurance payments and thereby reduce your childcare costs. They are available for all children up to 16 years old, so are not just useful for Playgroup, but for nursery's, childminders, before and afterschool clubs, holiday schemes and nannies too. Both parents are eligable to claim the vouchers, however your employer must be part of the scheme for you to take part.
Your employer benefits too, by getting reductions in national insurance payments for employees that are part of the scheme, so it works for them too.
To find out how you and your employer can benefit from the voucher scheme, visit the Busy Bees website via our links page.
We will have information about the voucher scheme at the playgroup during session times, so please feel free to ask any member of staff for more information, or contact us outside session times.
30th August 2006
The September edition of The Listing has a 1st birthday feature which includes a piece about Papillon Playgroup. We would like to thank Cath at The Listing for her wonderful support during our first year, and also extend our thanks to the parents and children that helped to make our first year in business so successful and such fun. You can visit The Listing website through our links page.
22nd June 2006
We are coming to the end of this term and our last day will be Friday 14th July. We will be starting back after the Summer holidays on Monday 11th September.
During the week before the new term we will be holding our second Picnic in the Park in the Priory Gardens on Thursday 7th September at 11am. All parents of new and previous attendees of Papillon Playgroup are welcome to join us. It is a good time to compare, pass on or collect feedback from each other, as well as have a good chinwag while the children play. We will be sending out reminder letters during the holidays. Please visit our contact page to let us know that you are interested. This will help us to prepare for the right number of people.
21st June 2006
Carrie and Anne would like to thank everyone who has supported Papillon Playgroup since we first opened our doors last September. We are coming up to the end of the Summer term, and our first year, and we hope you have been happy with our care. As you may know, we had our full Ofsted inspection last week, and we did very well. We passed with a Satisfactory Grade, with no actions to be made. This means that we are running to good Ofsted standards, and do not need to make any changes. Please follow the link from our About Us page to the Ofsted report page. Our full Ofsted report should be available online from August. Thank you all again for your help and support.
10th May 2006

As many of our parents have recently moved to Royston from other areas, we thought it would be nice to have a social event that everyone could join in with, and make friends. So we are planning to hold a 'Picnic in the Park' in the Priory Gardens during the half term holidays. All current and prospective parents are welcome to come along with their children for fun, games and to chat and socialise. You'll need to bring your own food and drink, we'll provide the toys and games. We'll confirm the exact date nearer the time (depending on the weather forecast). Please contact us if you would like to join in or would like more information.
22nd April 2006
Once again, a very big thank you to everyone who helped us to raise funds for new toys during our Easter Fun Day. We were able to buy a lot of new toys for the playgroup. Also we would like to thank the Early Learning Centre in Letchworth who very generously donated some of their ex display toys. This picture shows all of our new toys, which the children love playing with.

4th April 2006
The winners of our colouring competition were Ronan Kearns in the under5 category, and Georgia Anderson in the 5+. We are very grateful to Geraint Burnell, Royston's Town Centre Manager, for picking the winners.
1st April 2006

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Easter Fun Day such a success. We raised a grand total of £62.57 for new equipment.
The colouring competition will be judged by Royston's Town Centre Manager. The winners will be announced shortly, and the winning entries will be published on this page.
